The music industry has undergone a seismic shift in recent years. Gone are the days of fighting tooth and nail for a record deal and hoping for radio airplay. Today, streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and countless others reign supreme, providing a seemingly endless ocean of music for listeners to explore.
For independent musicians, particularly those here in the vibrant Phoenix music scene, this shift presents both challenges and exciting opportunities. The challenge lies in breaking through the noise and getting your music noticed amidst millions of other artists. The opportunity lies in the direct connection you can forge with your audience, bypassing gatekeepers and building a loyal fanbase.
But how do you navigate this complex landscape and ensure your music doesn't get lost in the algorithmic abyss? Here are some key strategies to make your music stand out in the streaming age:
1. Master Your Craft - Quality is King
First and foremost, the quality of your music is paramount. In a world saturated with content, a polished, professional sound separates the contenders from the pretenders. Whether you record at home, go to a studio or utilize a professional mobile service like mine (shameless plug alert!), ensure your music is well-produced, mixed, and mastered. This doesn't have to mean breaking the bank, but it does require a commitment to sounding your absolute best. The tools available now are so much better than what we had when I started this journey over 25 years ago. In fact, with the Reaper DAW for $60, and a handful of freeware VST plugins you can craft a professional sounding master. If you struggle with this though, don’t feel bad. We are all on a different path and hiring someone to help is more affordable than ever. Reach out to me with the contact form below and I can hopefully steer you in the right direction. We’re all in this together!
2. Cover Art Matters - Create a Visual Identity
First impressions matter, and your music's cover art is often the listener's first encounter with your sound. Invest in eye-catching artwork that reflects your musical style and brand. Simple, clean designs often hold the most impact. I come from the old school punk era where we did everything DIY. Now, I am more of an advocate of DIT (Do It Together). Hiring a graphic artist can be less expensive than you thought. Resources like Fiverr and 99Designs are one way to go but you may find that there’s a budding local or student artist who would absolutely love to create a logo or cover art for your music to boost their portfolio. If you ever go to events such as pop up markets, art festivals or even big events like first Fridays on Roosevelt Row you may meet an artist whose work you like. Try to strike a deal.
3. Metadata Magic - Optimize Your Tracks
Don't underestimate the power of metadata! Fill out all relevant information for each track, including titles, artist names, genres, and keywords. This helps streaming services categorize your music effectively and recommend it to listeners with similar tastes. In your social media posts you can use hashtags with the meta data (e.g. #metal or #punk) when promoting the song.
4. Playlists are Powerful - Pitching Strategies
Playlists curated by streaming platforms and tastemakers hold immense power in driving discovery. Research relevant playlists within your genre and consider pitching your music for inclusion. Many platforms offer artist-submitted tools, while some require reaching out directly to playlist curators. Persistence and professionalism are key here.
5. Social Media Savvy - Engage Your Audience
Social media is your weapon of choice for building a fanbase and creating a buzz around your music. Regularly share updates, behind-the-scenes glimpses, and engaging content on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. Utilize streaming service features like "pre-saves" and "artist profiles" to further connect with your audience.
6. Proactive Promotion: Reach Out Directly & Utilize Targeted Ads
While streaming platform algorithms play a significant role in discovery, there's immense power in taking a proactive approach to promotion. Here's a two-pronged strategy for getting your music noticed:
Direct Outreach: Building relationships with music bloggers, online magazines, and playlist curators can be a game-changer. I understand the legwork involved in finding the right contacts. That's why I've created a curated list specifically for Phoenix musicians like yourself! This free downloadable Google Doc compiles a comprehensive list of local and national music blogs and online publications. Just send me an email and I’ll send you a link to this free document. It's about 6 pages and continuously updated.
For each entry, you'll find the website address and contact information for editors or curators. This valuable resource streamlines your outreach efforts, allowing you to focus on crafting compelling pitches and highlighting what makes your music unique.
Targeted Social Media Ads:
Social media advertising offers another powerful tool for reaching a wider audience. Most platforms allow you to define specific demographics and interests, ensuring your music reaches listeners most likely to appreciate it. This targeted approach maximizes the impact of your budget compared to a broad campaign.
7. Live & Local - Gigging is Still Crucial
The magic of live performance is undeniable. Performing live shows in Phoenix builds a local fanbase, creates a stronger connection with your audience, and can even lead to opportunities for further exposure, like getting featured on local tastemakers playlists or blogs.
8. Collaboration is Key - Feature Artists & Remixes
Consider collaborating with other local Phoenix artists. Feature vocals from a different genre, or co-write a track. Collaborations not only expand your sound but tap into another artist's fanbase, broadening your reach. Similarly, remixes of existing tracks can spark renewed interest and introduce your music to new ears.
9. Be Patient & Persistent - Building Success Takes Time
Building a successful music career in the streaming age takes dedication, perseverance, and a strategic approach. Don't get discouraged by overnight success stories. Focus on consistently releasing quality music, engaging with your audience, and refining your promotional strategies. Consistency and persistence is the key here. Frequent releases and social media posts to keep you top of mind with your public will help you generate streams and merch sales. If your genre of music is something like rock, metal, country or punk where you’re in a collaborative band setting, consider posting videos of your gigs. You can document your concerts (contact info below if you want to hire me… another plug, sorry) and post live versions of your songs in your social media feed. If you play 10 songs in a set at a show once or twice a month that’s 10 to 20 great social media posts next month.
10. Knowledge is Power - Stay Updated
The streaming landscape is constantly evolving. Keep yourself informed on the latest trends and algorithm updates that might affect how your music gets discovered. Consider resources like "Music Ally" or "Hypebot" for industry insights and advice.
